Michigan's DNR refuses to recognize Michigan's cougar population until they have a dead animal in their hands or proof of a wild breeding population. Physical evidence is CRUCIAL to establishing a breeding population. Please take pictures, collect scat, and cast tracks. If you are aware of any person knowing of a continuous breeding population in Michigan, please have them contact me and fill out the DNR Cougar reporting form online.

Is this list concrete proof that Michigan has a breeding population? There is a high probability that these cougar sightings are proof of a breeding population. Cougars are solitary animals and are only found in pairs or more for specific reasons. The presence of larger and smaller cougars in a group points to young with mother. If not a family unit, the only other explanation of two cougars together is a mating pair - which is also a sign of a breeding population in the act of recolonizing their former range. Cougars who encounter each other outside of the family or mating setting are known to fight and kill each other. There is an excellent article in the July, 1992 National Geographic describing these behaviors.

Using information compiled by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, it was determined that approximately 50% of anecdotal reports (as listed above), can be classified as probable or verified. Reports by the public, when carefully screened for reliability, and used in conjunction with other information and evidence, can aid in assessing population status. The above Upper Peninsula sightings were carefully screened for reliability by retired DNR Forester Mike Zuidema who has collected 975+ cougar sightings in the Upper Pensinsula since the early 1980s.
